Where previous generations of artists once favored rigid techniques and spending thousands of hours in studios glazing hundreds of layers of paint, now artists aspired to create more immediate paintings and tried to more directly capture the world they saw.<\/p>\n

This class, meant for students at all skill levels, will start from the ground up teaching students how to mix colors like the impressionists and introduce students to various techniques that evolved in the late 1800s and early 1900s.<\/p>\n

Pochoir (from the French word for “stencil”) is the traditional printmaking method using intricate hand-cut stencils and brushes to apply layers of vibrant color, yielding prints rich with textures and colors.<\/p>\n

Learn the basics of a modernized version of the classical pochoir method for printmaking. By the end of this class, you will have not only a beautiful series of handmade prints but all the skills necessary to continue making pochoir prints at home for years to come.<\/p>\n

Through this class, students will learn how to create and divide an image into separate color layers, how to hand-cut intricate stencils using \u201cbridges\u201d, methods for registration and alignment of printed layers, methods for inking stencils to create areas of solid ink or ombre patterns, and the process of editioning a series of prints.<\/p>\n
